Hello Everyone,

We’re psyched! After an incredible week of mixed fortunes we dominated the Medal Race for the Yngling Class today at US Sailing’s 2008 Rolex Olympic Classes Regatta on Biscayne Bay. The victory pulled us up from 8th place to 6th place overall and just seven points out of the Bronze Medal for third place.

Mandy Mulder and her Dutch crew finished seventh but their points lead was sufficiently big to earn them the Gold Medal anyway. It was the same situation with Ekaterina Skudina’s Russian boat, which took the Silver after finishing 10th. A second Dutch boat, sailed by Renee Groeneveld won the Bronze.

sThe breeze dropped out after the completion of the Laser Radial racing but eventually we were rewarded by light southeasterly conditions of 5-7 knots. We liked the left and started at the pin end, with only the German boat to leeward of us. Our boat handling was good and we got off the line well, although the Germans were a bit forward on us due to the pin bias.

Eventually, three of us tacked simultaneously, almost on the port tack layline. The German boat, skippered by Ulrike Schuemann, led around the top mark, we were next and were followed by Anna Baselkina, sailing the other Russian boat. We were able to overtake the Germans on the run, only to have them pass again on the next beat. We got back again on the run and led to the finish.

We want to say a big thank you to our coaches and everyone who worked with us this week. This was our first Yngling racing for several months and we treated it as practise for the upcoming World Championship, here in Miami. Our scores weren’t as consistent as we would have liked but we proved we could climb back from some pretty tough situations. Well take all that, and another week of practise, into the World Championship.
