With a few exceptions, performances varied widely in the Yngling fleet in light and fluky conditions today at US Sailing’s 2008 Rolex Olympic Classes Regatta on Biscayne Bay.

Team 7 Sailing concentrated on working our way back into contention after yesterday’s score of tenth overall, and we moved up to eighth overall with 5th and 10th place finishes in the two races sailed in a light and faltering sea breeze that never got over seven knots.

With three days racing completed and three to go, Ekaterina Skudina’s Russian entry took over the top of the leaderboard with a 1-5 record. One of the biggest scoring shifts came from Sarah Ayton’s British Olympic crew who dropped from first yesterday to 6th today, after scoring 13th and 24th. By comparison, Chinese skipper Song Xia Qun, who led after day one and dropped to 9th yesterday, came back today with two consistent fourth places to move back to 4th overall.

In both races today we deviated from our game plan at the last minute and paid the price. In the first race we fought back from the middle of the fleet at the weather mark to finish 5th. In the second, we were three or four boats from the bottom of the fleet before everything clicked for us as we climbed back to tenth.

Tomorrow the forecasters are promising wind in the 15 knots range and we’re eager to get out there and race in a breeze. Remember, our Team 7 site is at http://www.team7sailing.com. Please come visit. We have an exciting and eventful four weeks ahead of us.
