Qingdao, China It wasn’t intentional but we practised coming from behind in the Yngling fleet today at the 2007 Good Luck Beijing International Regatta in Qingdao. After trailing in last place at the first weather mark in both races today, we achieved 1-4 finishes in more light-wind, current-dominated competition on Fushan Bay.
We’re now tied for first again with Sarah Ayton’s British crew after beginning today three points behind them in second place overall. We had a good day. We mistakes we should not have made, but we had the speed and the smarts to counter the errors. From rounding the first weather mark last in both races we started applying the lessons we’ve learned this week in sailing in Qingdao current and steadily picked off boats in both races. Renee Groeneveld’s Dutch team has been strong all week and today they finished second in both races. They were leading the first race on the run to the finish but we pulled off a pretty neat jibe just before the finish to claim first place. In the second race Siljia Lehtinen’s Finnish crew won the race and we finished third, behind the Dutch girls but ahead of the Brits. Tomorrow we have three races scheduled to wrap up the series and decide the ten top boats that will advance to the double-points Medal Race on Thursday. Thanks for following our big adventure. And a special thanks to Sperry Top-Sider for their support.
