Position: Jib Trimmer, Bow, Tactician Debbie Capozzi, from Bayport, NY, brings incredible focus and knowledge to the team as tactician, jib trimmer and motivator. Debbie sailed for Old Dominion University where earned a BA in education and received All American honors in sailing. While in college she won the Intercollegiate Sailing Sailing Association National Championship. For two years at ODU she was the sailing team captain. Debbie grew up sailing on Great South Bay on the south shore of Long Island, NY. Her home yacht club is the Sayville Yacht Club where she started sailing at the age of 12 and received the Commodore’s Award for two years running. She also received the US Sailing Sportsman’s Award at a young age. In high school, Debbie excelled in and out of the classroom, lettering in 11 varsity sports, and receiving All-League and All-Conference Honors in softball. Competing in a variety of boats, Debbie has established herself as a world class sailor, having won the Women's Laser Radial North Americans, placed second at the Canadian Olympic Classes Regatta in the Laser Radial Class, and won the women's division of the NY Empire State Games. When she is not crewing for Team 7 in the Yngling, Debbie likes to skipper boats in match racing contests. Together Debbie and Sally have enjoyed many successes, including the Rolex Women's Match Racing Championship, the US Women's Double-Handed Championship, and the Intercollegiate North America Dinghy Championship. Debbie also spends a great deal of time coaching youth and high school sailing teams. Off the water Debbie enjoys spending her time camping, backpacking, rock climbing and snowboarding. Other leisure pursuits include reading, golf and windsurfing. |
